Resources and Incentives
for EV Ownership

There are several incentives offered for those who opt to own an EV or install electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). Listed on this page are the current organizations and programs offering monetary incentive programs across Maine.

Utility Provider Incentives

Versant Power has expanded certain rates and created new rates to offer savings for customers using electric vehicles. The new and/or expanded rates will encourage electricity use during periods of lower demand and aim to help customers save money.

Home Eco Rate – (Bangor Hydro District)

  • Time of use rate available for electric vehicle charging and/or battery storage.

  • This is the same as Versant's residential service rate time-of-use, but adds electric vehicle charging and electric battery storage.

Business Eco Rate – (Maine Public District and Bangor Hydro District)

  • This rate is for commercial Level 2 electric vehicle charging and battery storage.

  • This is the same as the Maine Public District’s General Service and the Bangor Hydro District General Service with a 50kW cap.

 

Home Eco Rate with Bonus Meter – (Bangor Hydro District)

  • This rate is the same as residential electric thermal storage, but adds separately metered EV charging and/or storage.

  • Payment is required for second meter installation, but there are no separate minimum monthly charges for a second meter.

DC Fast Charging and Storage Eco Rate – (Bangor Hydro District)

  • This rate is for Level 3+ (fast) EV charging and battery storage.

  • Payment is required for second meter installation, but there are no separate minimum monthly charges for a second meter.

Vehicle Incentives

Federal Tax Credits may be available to some new battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

 

New Electric Vehicles

  • You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified vehicle from 2023 to 2032.

Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit

  • Businesses and tax-exempt organizations that buy a qualified commercial clean vehicle may qualify for a clean vehicle tax credit of up to $40,000 under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) 45W.

Used Vehicles

  • If you buy a qualified used electric vehicle from a licensed dealer for $25,000 or less, you may be eligible for a used clean vehicle tax credit. The credit equals 30% of the sale price up to a maximum credit of $4,000.

Electric Vehicle Incentives for Low-Income Mainers

  • Efficiency Maine offers vehicle purchase and lease incentives up to $7,500 for qualified low-income Mainers. 

Infrastructure Incentives

You may be eligible for the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Tax Credit if you install qualified vehicle refueling or electric vehicle recharging property in your home or business. The property must be installed in a qualifying location and the credit allowed is based on the placed-in-service date for the qualifying property.

Efficiency Maine is offering a EV Managed Charging incentive to reduce the power customers draw to charge their EVs when demand on the electric grid is at its highest. Eligible chargers and/or vehicles enrolled may qualify for a $50 enrollment reward and $50 annual participation reward.
